Pleomorphic Adenoma and Adenoid-Cystic Carcinoma of the Salivary Glands: Comparative Immunohistochemical Patterns
1987
A series of 20 cases of pleomorphic adenoma and 19 cases of adenoid-cystic carcinoma of the salivary glands, and one case in the mammary location, were investigated regarding immunohistochemical reactivity for Tissue Polypeptid Antigen (TPA), Pre-Keratins, Vimentin, S-100 Protein, and their arrangement pattern of fibronectin. As a whole, the results support the hypothesis of morpho-structural and mainly, onto-histogenetic similarities between these tumours, but they also underline the need for great care in outlining their morpho-functional features, in relation to their different prognoses.
In vitro effects of benzalkonium chloride and prostaglandins on human meibomian gland epithelial cells
2019
Abstract Purpose Benzalkonium chloride is the most widely used preservative in ophthalmic topical solutions. The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of BAC as a single substance or as a component of several commercially available ophthalmic solutions on meibomian gland epithelial cells in vitro. Materials and methods An immortalized human meibomian gland epithelial cell line (HMGEC) was used and cells were cultured in the absence or presence of fetal bovine serum to assess cell morphology, cell proliferation, cell viability (MTS assay) and impedance sensing (ECIS) after stimulation with BAC. Further, the viability of HMGECs stimulated with BAC-containing and BAC-free bimatopr…
Multidimensional Prognostic Index and pro-adrenomedullin plasma levels as mortality risk predictors in older patients hospitalized with community-acq…
2018
BACKGROUND: To evaluate the prognostic accuracy of proadrenomedullin (proADM) in comparison with and in addition to the Multidimensional Prognostic Index (MPI), a validated predictive tool for mortality derived from a comprehensive geriatric assessment (CGA) to predict one-month mortality risk in older patients hospitalized with community-acquired pneumonia (CAP). METHODS: All patients aged 65 years and older, consecutively admitted to an acute geriatric ward with a diagnosis of CAP from February to July 2012. At admission and at discharge they were submitted to a standard CGA in order to calculate MPI. Moreover, plasma samples were taken at baseline and after one, three and five days of ho…
Influence of training and a maximal exercise test in analytical variability of muscular, hepatic, and cardiovascular biochemical variables.
2014
Short, middle, and long-term exercise, as well as the relative intensity of the physical effort, may influence a broad array of laboratory results, and it is thereby of pivotal importance to appropriately differentiate the 'physiologic' from the 'pathological' effects of exercise. Therefore, the values of some biomarkers in physically active subjects may be cautiously interpreted since the results may fall outside the conventional reference ranges. It has been demonstrated that middle and long-term endurance and/or strenuous exercise triggers transient elevations of muscular and cardiac biomarkers. However, no data have been published about the effect of short-term maximal exercise test on …
Erythrocyte Membrane Phosphatidylserine Exposure in Obesity
2008
It has been suggested that increased erythrocyte membrane phosphatidylserine (PS) exposure could contribute to hypercoagulability and hemorheological disturbances in obesity. The aim of our study was to evaluate PS exposure in obese patients and in a control group and to correlate this with hemorheological properties, i.e., erythrocyte aggregability (EA) and deformability, and to evaluate the effect of weight loss on these parameters. An anthropometric and analytical evaluation was performed at baseline and after 3 months on a diet (very low-calorie diet for 4 weeks and low-calorie diet for 2 months) on 49 severe or morbid obese patients (37 women, 12 men) and 55 healthy volunteers (39 wome…
Reactivation of chronic type B hepatitis: the effect on expression of serum HBV-DNA and pre-S encoded proteins.
1988
Hepatitis B markers were studied in seven patients with reactivated liver disease. Reactivation of chronic type B hepatitis, as indicated by the reappearance of hepatitis B e antigen (HBeAg) in the serum, was characterised by the appearance of hepatitis B virus-DNA (HBV-DNA) in the serum. The expression of pre-S 1 encoded protein remained unchanged in five of seven patients, and poly-HSA as a marker for pre-S 2 encoded protein remained detectable in six of seven patients before and after reactivation of chronic hepatitis. The level of serum HBV-DNA correlated well with the level of liver enzymes, which rose from normal to various levels after reactivation of the liver disease. The data sugg…
Hepatitis B defective virus with rearrangements in the preS gene during chronic HBV infection.
1991
We have found a defective form of HBV2 in a HBsAg- and anti-HBe-positive patient with liver cancer. Viral deletions were identified in the preS coding region using PCR. The presence of deleted HBV forms was observed in serum, PBMC, and liver samples. After sequencing 12 clones were analyzed (subtype adr). In 9 out of 12 clones a 183-bp in-frame deletion was recorded in the preS1 region (2995 to 3177). Three out of 9 clones also yielded rearrangements of the preS2 N-terminal part. Four out of 9 showed numerous point mutations in the preS1 and preS2 sequence. In addition, 3 out of 12 clones, which did not show the 183-bp preS1 deletion were found to have small deletions and insertions in the …
A female with X‐linked Nephrogenic diabetes insipidus in a family with inherited central diabetes Insipidus: Case report and review of the literature
2020
There are two forms of diabetes insipidus, central (neurohypophyseal), and nephrogenic, caused by pathogenic variants in the AVP gene and the AVPR2 or AQP2 genes, respectively. We report on a four-generation family, seven individuals had central diabetes insipidus (CDI) and the female index patient seen from age 16 to 26 years had (mild) nephrogenic diabetes insipidus. In her father with CDI, a known pathogenic heterozygous AVP variant c.232_234del p.(Glu78del) was identified, confirming the diagnosis of CDI in him and the other affected family members. In the proband, molecular analysis disclosed a novel heterozygous AVPR2 gene variant, c.962A > T p.(Asn321Ile) and an extremely skewed X-in…
Adrenomedullin and arterial stiffness: integrative approach combining monocyte ADM expression, plasma MR-Pro-ADM, and genome-wide association study.
2014
Background— Adrenomedullin (ADM) is a circulating vasoactive peptide involved in vascular homeostasis and endothelial function. Single nucleotide polymorphisms of the ADM gene are associated with blood pressure variability, and elevated levels of plasma midregional proadrenomedullin (MR-pro-ADM) are associated with cardiovascular diseases. Methods and Results— We investigated the sources of variability of ADM gene expression and plasma MR-pro-ADM concentrations in the general population, and their relationship with markers of atherosclerosis. MR-pro-ADM levels were assessed in 4155 individuals who underwent evaluation of carotid intima-media thickness and arterial rigidity (reflection inde…
Association of MR-proadrenomedullin with cardiovascular risk factors and subclinical cardiovascular disease.
2012
Abstract Aims and background Midregional proadrenomedullin (MR-proADM) is a protein, which exerts various effects on the cardiovascular system. Recent studies underscored its prognostic implications in patients with acute dyspnea and cardiovascular diseases. Therefore, we aimed to determine the distribution of MR-proADM in the general population and to reveal potential associations of MR-proADM with cardiovascular risk factors and measures of subclinical cardiovascular disease. Methods and results MR-proADM plasma concentrations were determined in individuals of the population-based cohort of the Gutenberg Health Study ( N = 5000) using a commercially available fluoroimmunoassay. Individua…
